EMPORIA, KAN. — After looking to cease operations at an Emporia, Kan., beef plant in February, Tyson Foods will now close the facility over the next few months.

A recent report by a local radio station KVOE, stated that around 430 people would still be retained at the start of mid-February. The last day of operations is now scheduled for June 27, according to the information from a letter provided to the radio station.

Previous reports said that Tyson officials expect to move operations to its Holcomb, Kan., facility.

The letter from Tyson noted that 220 employees would be kept on until March 28. Layoffs will continue until June.

MEAT+POULTRY reached out to Tyson Foods about an updated statement on the matter but did not receive a comment at the time of publication.

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close our beef and pork non-harvest processing facility in Emporia, Kan., to increase the efficiency of our operations,” a Tyson Foods spokesperson told MEAT+POULTRY in December. “We understand the impact of this decision on our team members and the local community. Taking care of our team members is our top priority and we encourage them to apply for other open roles within the company. We are also working closely with state and local officials to provide additional resources to those who are impacted.”

Tyson Foods took over the operation of the Emporia plant in 2001 after buying Iowa Beef Packers (IBP).
