BATESBURG, SC. — Over the weekend, poultry processor Amick Farms reported a fire broke out at its Batesburg, SC, facility, causing the company to temporarily halt production for several weeks.

On Jan. 25, the fire ignited at Amick Farms’ processing plant. Several first responders arrived at the to the scene, including Saluda County Fire Service. The fire department officials noted that no personnel were injured as a results of the incident.

“We are thankful for the assistance provided from neighboring counties during this event at Amick Farms over the weekend,” the Saluda County Fire Service said in a Facebook post following the event. “Props to Amick’s maintenance personnel and safety systems in place to keep this incident from becoming much worse.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway. Approximately 10,000 square feet of critical production space was damaged.

“It’s difficult to find the appropriate words to express our appreciation to our team members, first responders and the surrounding area for the support you are extending to us,” said Ben Harrison, president and chief executive officer of Amick Farms. “It is a blessing to be part of such a wonderful community that cares about all the families affected by this disruption.”

On Jan. 27, the company provided an update on its Facebook platform, saying night and day shift production do not need to work for the remainder of the week pending future updates. Sanitation workers were also told not to report on Jan. 27.

“We continue to assess the damage to determine the safest and most expedient means to resume operations,” Harrison said, adding that Amick Farms will continue to provide updates on the situation when available through its regular communication channels.

Amick Farms expects to begin processing once again within weeks, but complete repairs to the building may take a year.
