oday's consumers prioritize putting meat
and poultry on the table. Retail sales
reached $87.1 billion in 2022, according
to The Power of Meat 2023 and Circana data.
That's a 26% increase from the pre-pandemic
figure of $69.2 billion in 2019.
" Meat department sales and engagement
were strong in 2022 and continue to be in
2023. Meat and poultry has a 98.3% household
penetration, making it the most powerful of the

fresh departments, " says Anne-Marie Roerink,
president, 210 Analytics LLC, San Antonio,
Texas, and author of the report. " Sales grew
5.7% in 2022 (as compared to 2021) and pound
sales remained above pre-pandemic levels.
" Price, location and assortment dominate the
grocery store choice, with meat being the most
influential department, " says Ms. Roerink. " A
strong meat reputation is driven by freshness
and quality of the product. "
