SPRINGDALE, ARK. — Six days after fire damaged the Tyson Foods hog processing plant in Logansport, Ind., officials said the facility has been operating on a limited basis this week and it will begin ramping up production early next week.

Spokesman Gary Mickelson said the fire occurred in the area of the slaughter operation where equipment to remove hair from carcasses is used. Mr. Mickelson said the damage was “significant” and workers have been performing repairs since the March 5 incident.

Without providing cost estimates for the damage, Mr. Mickelson said “We can tell you roof repairs have been completed and crews have been busying replacing equipment and doing electrical re-wiring.” Limited slaughter operations are scheduled to resume March 15 with full production to begin March 16 at the facility, which employs 1,900 workers and has the capacity to slaughter 15,000 hogs per day.

Mr. Mickelson said the fire has meant most employees have not been able to work this week, and the company has encouraged those workers to consider using vacation time to ensure their incomes are not interrupted.
