DOWNERS GROVE, ILL. — Hillshire Farm Chicken Hardwood Smoked Sausage, a better-for-you alternative for consumers who like sausage but prefer a lower-fat, poultry option, was launched by Sara Lee North American Retail.

Containing 60% less fat than its traditional sausage counterparts, this new product contains no M.S.G. or M.S.C. and can be substituted into almost any recipe, the company claims.

This new product features a light flavor that the company said lends itself well to a variety of other ingredients. According to a recent study conducted by The NPD Group on national eating trends, the amount of consumers preparing meals at home has sharply risen due to the uncertain economy. One company executive added this new sausage offers an easy, economical way to enjoy a meal.

“With American families consuming more poultry than ever before, Hillshire Farm fills a void in the marketplace with the introduction of Chicken Hardwood Smoked Sausage,” said Tim Roush, vice-president, lunch and dinner brands, Sara Lee North American Retail. “We know offering our consumers variety, as well as an economical and lower-fat option, are most important.”

Product can be prepared and used in a grilled Panini sandwich, as a unique pizza topping or as a beef substitute in a favorite skillet, stir-fry or pasta recipe. It can also be sautéed, baked or barbequed.
