SPRINGDALE, Ark. – Tyson Foods’ Yappah Chicken Crisps is shutting down, according to yappah.com.

“We’re sorry, but Yappah Chicken Crisps are no longer available,” a message on the website stated. “The team decided that the product did not offer the viability that would enable continued investment. Thank you for your interest. Have a nice day!”

In a statement to MEAT+POULTRY, Tyson Foods said, “Yappah! was part of our disruptive innovation model. We have decided not to move forward with it at this time for a variety of reasons, including overall viability. Food waste is still a focus for us.”

The company formulated Yappah Chicken Crisps from “forgotten ingredients” such as “rescued vegetable puree and malted barley to help fight food waste,” according to Tyson’s website. The Yappah name was adapted from the word “yapa” which is a South American Andes tradition that refers to a little something extra a merchant gives to a favorite customer to avoid waste.

Tyson made four varieties of Yappah crisps — two made with vegetable puree and two made with spent brewers’ grain. The vegetable puree varieties come in chicken carrot curry and chicken celery mojo flavors. The spent grain items were available in chicken IPA white cheddar and chicken shandy beer flavors.
