MIAMI – In a direct challenge to its competitor, McDonald’s, Burger King unveiled a new burger the company claims is beefier than the Big Mac based on the weight of pre-cooked patties.

The Big King XL sandwich features more than a half-pound of beef, which Burger King says is 175 percent more beef than the Big Mac. The Big King XL is topped with American cheese, onions, pickles, lettuce and Burger King’s special sauce, all served on a toasted sesame seed bun.

To drive sales and mentions of the Big King XL, customers can get a free Big King XL in exchange for expired MacCoins at select Burger King restaurants in Chicago.

“The McDonald’s MacCoins were distributed in 2018 for the 50^th anniversary of the Big Mac, but as of Dec. 31 these coins can no longer be redeemed for a Big Mac,” Burger King said. “Now that the MacCoins have expired, Burger King is giving people one more day to use their MacCoins, but this time for the bigger, flame-grilled option.”
