SPRINGDALE, Ark. – Tyson Foods Inc. will run a pilot program on two emerging motor technologies in 2019.

The Springdale, Arkansas-based company, which has one of the largest private refrigerated trucking fleets in the country, will use the program to explore ways to reduce carbon emissions and conserve energy.

The technologies in the pilot are based on opposed-piston engine technology used by submarines, fighter planes and tanks throughout the 20th century. Tyson will test the engines in a truck that serves customers in California.

One user of opposed-piston technology, Achates Power, has achieved up to a 90 percent reduction in nitrous oxide emissions and a 15 percent reduction in CO2.

In addition to trialing opposed-piston technology in 2019, Tyson will also begin exploring alternative fuel motor types. As early as February, an all-electric terminal yard tractor will be tested at the company’s Northwest Arkansas distribution center.
