JACKSON, MISS. — Cal-Maine Foods Inc. has agreed to acquire the assets of Featherland Egg Farms Inc. relating to its commercial shell egg production, processing, distribution and sales business. Financial terms of the transaction, which Cal-Maine expects to close in the next few weeks, were not disclosed.

The acquisition includes commercial egg production and processing facilities with capacity for approximately 600,000 laying hens as well as a feed mill and related production and distribution facilities located near Marion, Texas.

“This transaction is consistent with our strategy to expand our business through selective acquisitions,” said Adolphus B. (Dolph) Baker, chairman and CEO of Cal-Maine Foods. “It is located near many of our other locations and major market areas in south Texas, and we intend to capitalize on specific market opportunities created by this additional production capacity. We look forward to the opportunity to extend our market reach and deliver greater value to both our customers and shareholders.”

Cal-Maine Foods has made a number of acquisitions in the past few years. In February 2017, the company acquired the assets of Happy Hen Egg Farms Inc., which included commercial egg production and processing facilities with capacity for approximately 350,000 laying hens and distribution facilities located near Harwood and Wharton, Texas. In August 2016, Cal-Maine Foods acquired the assets of Foodonics International Inc. and its related entities doing business as Dixie Egg Co. The transaction included commercial egg production and processing facilities with capacity for approximately 1.6 million laying hens and related feed production, milling and distribution facilities in Georgia, Alabama and Florida. Around the same time, Cal-Maine Foods also acquired the Egg-Land’s Best Inc. franchise.

Cal-Maine Foods Inc. primarily is engaged in the production, grading, packing and sale of fresh shell eggs, including conventional, cage-free, organic and nutritionally-enhanced eggs. The company is the largest producer and distributor of fresh shell eggs in the United States and sells the majority of its shell eggs in states across the southwestern, southeastern, mid-western and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.
