GREELEY, Colo. – Animal rights group Mercy for Animals released video footage July 17 it said was shot at a Kentucky pig farm that supplies JBS USA, a unit of São Paulo, Brazil-based JBS S.A. The video shows the mistreatment of pigs including workers beating piglets and ripping off testicles without anesthesia, according to a Reuters article. Reuters could not independently confirm the authenticity of the video.

According to a JBS statement sent to MEAT+POULTRY, the company has suspended shipments from the supplier pending a full investigation of the reported abuse.

“JBS USA does not tolerate the abuse of animals under any circumstances. We are investigating allegations of animal abuse at the site of a supplier that does business with the company,” the company said in its statement. “We expect all livestock to be handled in a safe and humane manner throughout our supply chain. Animal welfare is a priority for our company and our customers. We will ensure that all of our suppliers adhere to our high standards for animal care.”

According to Reuters, Mercy For Animals said the video was shot at a facility owned by Tosh Farms LCC in Franklin, Kentucky, between December 2017 and March 2018. Tosh Farms is among the 25 largest US pig producers and is a supplier to JBS, according to Mercy For Animals.
