WASHINGTON — Turkey, pork and butter stocks in freezers on Sept. 30 were down sharply from a year ago, while frozen chicken, cheese and egg stocks were up, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Cold Storage report.

Frozen turkey stocks totaled 469,866,000 lbs, down 6% from August and down 23% from September 2009, the USDA said. Total chicken stocks were 712,971,000 lbs, up 1% from August and up 12% from September 2009. Total frozen poultry supplies were 1,187,701,000 lbs, down 2% from August and down 5% from a year ago, the USDA said.


Frozen pork stocks on Sept. 30 totaled 425,523,000 lbs, up 10% from August but down 20% from September 2009, the USDA said. Frozen pork belly stocks were 4,764,000 lbs, down 34% from August and down 88% from September 2009. Beef stocks in freezers totaled 397,652,000 lbs, up 3% from August but down 7% from September 2009. Total frozen red meat supplies were 847,374,000 lbs, up 5% from August but down 14% from last year.

Sept. 30 butter stocks were 129,779,000 lbs, down 16% from August and down 43% from the previous year. Total natural cheese stocks on Sept. 30 were 1,045,929,000 lbs, up 1% from August and up 6% from September 2009.

Total frozen egg stocks at the end of September were 26,156,000 lbs, up 6% from August and up 21% from September 2009. Stocks of egg whites were 3,523,000 lbs, up 12% from August and up 34% from a year ago. Frozen egg yolk stocks were 643,000 lbs, up 8% from August but down 57% from the previous year. Whole and mixed egg stocks came in at 8,518,000 lbs, up 17% from August but down 4% from September 2009.

Unclassified egg stocks totaled 13,472,000 lbs, down 2% from August but up 56% from the previous year.
Frozen vegetable stocks totaled 2,554,511,000 lbs, up 13% from August but down 3% from September 2009. Stocks of frozen french fries were 849,657,000 lbs, up 4% from August but down 9% from the previous year.
Stocks of all types of frozen fruit on Sept. 30 totaled 1,135,992,000 lbs, up 2% from August but down 5% from last year.

Sept. 30 stocks of frozen orange juice concentrate were 1,037,170,000 lbs, down 9% from August and down 17% from September 2009.

Fresh apples in regular and controlled storage on Sept. 30 were 3,163,543,000 lbs, up 2,340% from August but down 2% from the previous year, the USDA said.
