McDonald’s Canada created a limited-time menu offering highlighted by street-style inspired “teaser” ads across the country, kicking off a year-long celebration of the Big Mac’s 50th anniversary.
“We took inspiration from how a fashion company might launch an exclusive collection by revealing the promotion as a limited-edition collaboration, through a series of billboards and ads until we finally revealed the Big Mac, treating it like the cultural icon it is,” said Antoinette Benoit, McDonald’s Canada CMO.
McDonald’s franchisee Michael “Jim” Delligatti of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, invented the Big Mac, which would become known for a catchy jingle composed to advertise the burger: “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.”
Delligatti created the Big Mac for his restaurants because he wanted to offer customers a “bigger burger.” In 1968, the Big Mac debuted in the United States and Canada.
“Over the course of its 50-year history, the Big Mac has become a culinary icon and the recipe has remained unchanged since its introduction. That’s pretty remarkable,” said Jeff Anderson, McDonald’s Canada Chef.
