WASHINGTON – During routine verification protocols at Westfield, Massachusetts-based Whip City Jerky, US Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service officials identified beef jerky products that contained undeclared allergens and a recall of approximately 1,391 lbs. of the products was issued on Feb. 1. Because the jerky contained milk, a known allergen that was not included on the product label, the recall was announced and specified products manufactured on multiple dates in December and January.

Specifically, the beef jerky items were produced between Dec. 18, 2017 and Jan. 31, 2018 and were shipped to retail stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut and other products were sold to customers ordering it on the internet and through catalog sales.

The recall specified that the following 2.8 oz. packages of the products were subject to recall:

“WHIPCITY JERKY BBQ BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020918, 022318, 030218, 030918, 031618 and 032318;

“WHIPCITY JERKY BLACK PEPPERED CURRY BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021218, 021918, 022618, 030518, 031218 and 031918;

“WHIPCITY JERKY CAJUN BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021118, 021818, 022518, 030418, 031118 and 031818;

“WHIPCITY JERKY HAWAIIAN BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021118, 021818, 022518, 030418, 031118 and 031818;

“WHIPCITY JERKY HOT ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020918, 022318, 030218, 030918, 031618 and 032318;

“WHIPCITY JERKY JALEPENO BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021118, 021818, 022518, 030418, 031118 and 031818;

“WHIPCITY JERKY LEMON PEPPER BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021018, 022418, 030318, 031018 and 031718;

“WHIPCITY JERKY MAPLE BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020818, 021518, 022218, 030118, 030818, 031518 and 032218;

“WHIPCITY JERKY MESQUITE BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021018, 022418, 030318, 031018, 031718 and 032418;

“WHIPCITY JERKY ORIGINAL BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020818 through 032418.

“WHIPCITY JERKY PLAIN BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020818, 030118, 030818, 031518 and 032218;

“WHIPCITY JERKY RAGIN BUFFALO BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 020918, 022318, 030218, 030918, 031618 and 032318; and

“WHIPCITY JERKY REDHOT RUDOLPH BEEF JERKY,” with best-when-used-by dates of 021018, 022418, 030318, 031018 and 031718.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 00948M” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail stores in Massachusetts and Connecticut and sold via internet/catalog sales.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. 

 Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

 FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
