WASHINGTON — During August, U.S. egg production totaled 7.59 billion, up 1% from last year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Production included 6.51 billion table eggs, and 1.08 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.00 billion were broiler-type and 72 million were egg-type.

Broiler-type chicks hatched during August 2009 totaled 778 million, down 3% from August 2008. Eggs in incubators totaled 618 million on Sept. 1, down 3% from a year earlier.

During August, leading breeders placed 7.13 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks, down 7% from August 2008.
