LAVERNE, Okla. – Plum Thicket, a sow farm owned by Smithfield Foods Inc., was heavily damaged by wild fires.

There were no reports of employee injuries, however the Plum Thicket sow farm sustained heavy damage and hogs were killed in the fire. Smithfield’s Oklahoma production facilities house approximately 45,000 sows, according to the company’s website. The facilities include two 10,000-head sow farms and multi-site farms.

In a statement, the company said “At Smithfield Foods, the safety and wellbeing of our employees continues to be our highest priority as we recover from the wildfires that devastated a company hog farm in Laverne, Oklahoma. While we are deeply thankful that no employees were harmed in the fire, we lament the unnecessary loss of animals and the devastation to the surrounding community. We are continuing to assess the damage, and are grateful for the efforts of local first responders throughout this situation.”
