The products contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is not declared on the product label, FSIS said. The finished product label also does not contain an ingredients statement or safe handling instructions.
Investigators with the Missouri Dept. of Agriculture Compliance discovered the problem on Jan. 3. The sausage products were found in a retail case with ingredients statements and safe handling instructions missing on the labels attached to the individual cryovac packages, FSIS said. However, the master case was properly labeled with ingredient and safe handling labels. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
The affected products were produced on various dates from June 28, 2016 to Dec. 20, 2016. Products subject to the recall include:
• 8-lb. cases containing 1 lb. cryovac wrapped packages of Caldarello Italian Sausage with a case code of 335000
• 8-lb. cases containing 1 lb. cryovac wrapped packaged of Caldarello Italian Turkey Sausage with a case code of 437800.
The affected products bear establishment number “EST. 7147” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The sausages were shipped to a distributor and retail locations in Missouri.
