The Blue Ridge Beef products may be contaminate with Salmonella and Listeria, according to the FDA.

WASHINGTON – Eatonton, Georgia-based Blue Ridge Beef launched a recall of frozen pet food products on concerns the items may be contaminated with Listeria and/or Salmonella, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported.

The company initiated the recall after the FDA received two complaints associated with the products, including one complaint of a puppy death and one complaint of kitten illnesses. Testing of a 2-lb. chub of beef for dogs and kitten grind that were collected at a veterinarian’s office revealed the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, FDA said. However, there is no evidence linking the kitten illnesses or the puppy death to contaminated product.

The affected products are sold in 2-lb. chubs and bear the following manufacturing codes:

  • Lot #mfd ga8516 Beef for dogs UPC code 8542980011009
  • Lot #mfd ga81216 Kitten grind UPC code 854298001016

The products were distributed to retail stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Arizona and Texas, FDA said.

The agency noted there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated products. FDA is urging consumers to practice thorough hand washing after having contact with the products or any surface exposed to the products.
