WASHINGTON – Inventory of cattle and calves on feed on Nov. 1 slipped 1 percent to 10.7 million head, the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the US Dept. of Agriculture said in its Cattle on Feed report. The report includes cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head.
Feedlot placements eased 5 percent to 2.17 million head in October. Net placements were 2.11 million head, NASS said in its report. For the month of October, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 lbs. were 610,000 head; 600-699 lbs. were 525,000 head, 700-799 lbs. were 471,000 head, and 800 lbs. and greater were 565,000 head.
Marketings of fed cattle in October climbed 5 percent above the year-ago period for a total of 1.71 million head, while other disappearance totaled 57,000 head, 24 percent below October 2015.
