Chipotle Mexican Grill burrito with chorizo, chips and salsa
Chipotle plans to launch the Chorizo on National Taco Day.

DENVER – Oct. 4, National Taco Day, will mark the nationwide launch of chorizo in all Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in the United States.

In 2015, Chipotle first tested the spicy sausage in Kansas City, Missouri. But a national rollout was delayed following a series of foodborne illness issues that affected some Chipotle restaurants. The company re-introduced chorizo in June this year as a test in Columbus, Ohio, New York City, Sacramento, California, and San Diego; in addition to one restaurant in Denver and Dulles International Airport in Washington.

“The reaction to chorizo in the cities that have had it has been overwhelmingly positive, so we’re making it available in all of our restaurants across the country,” Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of Chipotle, said in a news release. “Our chorizo is made with responsibly raised chicken and pork, and provides a delicious new option that fits perfectly with the rest of our menu.”

The sausage is made with a blend of pork and white-meat chicken and seasoned with paprika, toasted cumin and chipotle peppers. Chorizo is available in Chipotle’s burritos, tacos, burrito bowls and salads and can be combined with other signature ingredients, the company said.
