Whopperruito
The Whopperito is the latest addition to the Burger King menu.

MIAMI – Burger King is breaking out of its comfort zone with its newest menu item – the Whopperito. The burger-burrito mashup offers customers everything they love about the Whopper with a Tex-Mex twist.

After successful test marketing, Burger King plans to take the Whopperito national at participating restaurants beginning Aug. 15. The burrito burger is made with the same flame-grilled beef that the chain is known for.

“We’re infusing classic American fare with Tex-Mex flare,” said Alex Macedo, president, North America, for the Burger King brand.

The idea for the Whopperrito burger-burrito originally came from a BK franchisee. It’s prepared with many of the same ingredients as the Whopper burger, except a creamy queso sauce replaces the Whopper’s signature mayonnaise. The beef is also seasoned with a blend of spice to deliver the Tex-Mex flavor. It is then layered with tomatoes, onions and lettuce and topped with pickles and queso sauce before being wrapped in a flour tortilla.

“The Whopperrito is a new interpretation of the Tex-Mex trend in a way that only Burger King restaurants could imagine and uses the classic flame-grilled 100 percent beef Whopper sandwich meat to set this burger-burrito hybrid apart from other burritos out there,” Macedo said.

The Whopperrito debuts for $2.99 and as part of a combo meal for $4.99.

Yum! Brands’ Taco Bell chain of restaurants is also moving away from its traditional fare with its latest Flatbread Sandwich offerings. The chain offers both steak and chicken varieties. The flatbreads feature either braised steak or white-meat chicken covered in a melted three-cheese blend, smothered in chipotle sauce in a flatbread. They retail for $1.49.
