A bacon and egg pie made by Patrick’s Pie Group Gold Star Bakery, Tauranga, New Zealand, recently was crowned with the 2016 Supreme Pie Award. Bakels, an Auckland-based bakery ingredient supplier, sponsors the annual competition.

A panel of 21 judges took more than 10 hours sampling and judging 5,284 pies entered in the contest. The pies were blind-coded in 12 categories. This is the fifth Supreme Pie Award for Patrick’s Pie Group, which has won 56 other awards in the competition. The bakery, owned by Patrick Lam, also captured a silver award for its steak and cheese pie and a “highly commended” nod for its Cointreau pear, apple and cherry cheesecake pie.

The awards were presented at a “Pies of the Round Table” medieval-themed gala dinner that was opened by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
