SANTA FE SPRINGS, Calif. – At least 100 workers will lose their jobs in August as JBS USA Food Co. prepares to relocate plant operations to Riverside, California, from Santa Fe Springs.

A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) filed with the California Economic Development Department shows that 101 employees will be affected by the transition; however the plant closure date is unknown at this time.

In a statement to MEAT+POULTRY, the company said “JBS USA will not renew its lease on an almost 40-year-old, 50,000-sq.-ft. facility in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., where the company processes case-ready meat products and instead will transfer production to its state-of-the-art facility in Riverside, 50 miles away. WARN notices have been issued to approximately one third of the Santa Fe Springs 392 full time employees to date. JBS will continue to wind down operations through March of 2017. Severance packages are been made available to the Santa Fe Springs employees. JBS is also offering an option to relocate to Riverside or other JBS locations for those who wish to continue employment with the company.”

The meat processing plant in Santa Fe Springs covers 50,000 sq. ft. and employs about 300 workers. Products manufactured at the plant include case-ready beef, pork and chicken.

The Riverside plant, which covers 110,000 sq. ft., currently is undergoing an expansion that will add 60,000 sq. ft. to the facility. About 200 workers are employed at the plant.
