MUNICH – “The restaurant of the future” is coming to Germany.

McDonald’s announced the fast-food chain has begun a remodeling initiative in Germany that will cost the company €500 million ($556 million). Enhancements include a modern design for dining rooms, updated kitchens and ordering systems, more digital offerings and children’s play areas.

The “restaurant of the future” also will offer the “make your Mac” option, which allows customers to choose their own ingredients. Holger Beeck, CEO of McDonald’s Germany, said “more flexibility and individuality are important trends that we want to pursue.”

Innovations in ordering systems include new digital kiosks and service staff equipped with tablet PCs. Customers also will have the option of table service.

The company expects to convert most of its 1,472 restaurants to the new concept by the end of 2019. A model of the design refresh can be seen at the Frankfurt airport.
