Taking down a four-course meal of only bacon is not an easy task. Very few have been able to accomplish it.

RecentlyDes Moines Registerreporter Matthew Leimkuehler took on an all-bacon meal challenge at the local establishment Jethro’s BBQ ‘n Bacon. In the article Leimkuehler breaks down his pallet and how he scarfed down 10 crispy strips to start and proceeded to the bacon ice cream for dessert.

“I can’t speak for all readers and what they may or may not enjoy, but — with Bacon Fest around the corner — it seemed like a neat way to say “Hey! Here’s how I’m getting pumped for this annual festival,” Leimkuehler said. “Maybe you can get excited for it, too.”

Bruce Gerleman, the owner of Jethro’s BBQ ‘n Bacon opened the place in October of 2014 and found a good hook for his business.

“The whole concept of having breakfast always struck me and, of course, a part of breakfast is having bacon,” he said.

Since then the place has grown into a local favorite in the Des Moines area along with the rest of his Jethro’s BBQ locations. According to Gerleman, his seven restaurants are the largest independent purchasers of pork in the state of Iowa serving 35,000-40,000 people a week.

Jethro’s was featured at the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival on Feb. 20. The crowd of more than 10,000 people from around the world at the festival will voted on the best dish. Jethro’s is in the running with their famous bacon-wrapped rib.

Gerleman said his group has won it two years in a row thanks to the delicious combination of bacon and barbecue.

“It’s a slow cooked rib wrapped in bacon and then we smoke and it’s delicious,” Gerleman said.
