Dickey's Barbecue Pit is becoming more eco-friendly.

DALLAS - Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is trying to take the extra paper out of circulation at its restaurants.

The company launched new paper products system wide that will reduce carbon footprint and generate more opportunities for profitability for owners and operators.

Included in this initiative are greener products such as clamshell takeout containers, wood pellets, and elimination of foam products. Eco-friendly catering plates are planned to be launched in May 2016.

“We are proud to roll out these green improvements to current products,” says Tamala Fowler, Vice President of Purchasing and R&D. “Positive feedback from Owner/Operators and guests inspire us to continue moving toward more sustainability initiatives and eco-friendly practices.”

Dickey’s new paper towels will replace current paper products and napkins. According to the company's release, the new paper towels are made from 40 percent post-consumer recycled fiber, exceeding EPA guidelines.

New clamshell takeout containers are made of 100 percent sugarcane, which is fully compostable and fully recyclable.

Dickey’s will also rolled out wood pellets to be used in smokers last October with the debut of its newly redesigned store concept. The wood pellets are made of a blend of hickory, cherry, and other woods. They use 80 percent less wood than a traditional pit smoker, which helps reduce the carbon footprint as well.

Recently, Dickey’s opened up its 100th restaurant in California. The chain continues to grow and has almost 530 locations in 43 states.
