OTTAWA, Ontario – Hillview Meat Processor launched a recall of raw pork and pork organ products on concerns of possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reported. The recall was triggering during a multi-agency investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak in the province of Alberta; although no illnesses have been definitively linked to consumption of the affected products, CFIA noted.
However, Alberta Health Services (AHS) said the outbreak includes 14 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7. Testing linked at least two of the 14 cases with a specific pork sausage product sold by a Calgary-based retailer, AHS reported.
CFIA said the affected pork products may have been turned into raw muscle meat cuts, ground pork, sausages and raw ready-to-eat items. The pork may have been sold fresh or frozen, but CFIA said the products were distributed only in Alberta.
Additionally, the pork products may have been sold by a clerk or pre-packaged with or without a label. Paolini’s Sausage & Meat Ltd., Trimming Fresh Meats, V&T Meats, Leung Ky Meat & Seafood Ltd, Community Foods, Hungarian Deli and Rocky’s Sausage Haus are known to have sold or distributed the affected products, CFIA said.
