SMITHFIELD, Va. – Processing facilities owned by Smithfield Foods resumed production Jan. 12 after a computer glitch idled several of the company’s plants on Jan. 11.

Kathleen Kirkham, a spokeswoman for the company said technical issues at the company’s data center were behind the shutdown. One plant affected by the problem was a Farmland Foods pork processing plant in Crete, Neb.

“We will mitigate yesterday’s production down-time by adding additional shifts this week,” Kirkham said.
