WASHINGTON – A poultry processing plant owned by Laurel, Miss.-based Sanderson Farms Inc. launched a recall of 551,090 lbs. of chicken parts on concerns the products may be contaminated by foreign matter, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the US Dept. of Agriculture reported. The parts were processed at a Sanderson facility in Hazelhurst, Miss.

FSIS said a further-processor alerted Sanderson to the problem after finding metal shavings in the chicken. Sanderson investigated the matter, and found that the contamination occurred due to a malfunctioning ice-making machine used during production. The products were shipped to processing plants in Georgia, FSIS noted.


The affected items were produced on Sept. 17-18 and bear the establishment number “EST. P-247” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Items subject to the recall include:

• 70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO BONELESS SKINLESS BREAST FILLETS WITH RIB MEAT” with case code 45017.

• 70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO CLIPPED TENDERLOINS” with case code 45092.

• 70-lb. cases containing “YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS JUMBO BONELESS SKINLESS BREAST BUTTERFLIES WITH RIB MEAT” with case code 45015.

• 70-lb. cases and 1800-lb. combos containing “FRESH YOUNG CHICKEN PARTS BREAST FRAMES” with case code 45969.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
