PHOENIX – His nickname while pitching was the “Big Unit.” Understandable, considering former Arizona Diamondbacks Pitcher Randy Johnson stands 6-foot-10.
So what food item to celebrate with Johnson on the night the Diamondbacks retired his number on Aug. 10? A cake! Nah! Cupcakes? Never! For the Big Unit, it had to be something large, like a 51-inch-long corndog – a special version of the team’s “D-bat Dog” — in honor of his number (51) and height, of course.
On the night Johnson was honored at Chase Field in Phoenix, the organization tweeted, “A night like this deserves a special treat. Enjoy your 51” D-bat Dog, Randy! #RJ51”
The normal D-bat Dog available at Chase Field is an 18-inch corn dog stuffed with cheddar cheese, jalapeno and bacon, and served with chipotle ketchup, spicy mustard and fries.
Incidentally, Johnson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July. He went 303-166 in his 22-year career with the Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners with 4,875 strikeouts and a 3.29 ERA. He led the Diamondbacks to a World Series championship in 2001.
