SMITHFIELD, Va. – Michael Skahill, vice president of global affairs for Smithfield Foods, was elected vice chairman of the non-profit US-Poland Business Council tasked with enhancing US-Poland trade relations.

Skahill joined Smithfield in 1998 with 13 years of international meat merchandising and trading experience under his belt. He previously worked for the Louis Dreyfus Corporation, the United States Meat Export Federation and Cargill. At Smithfield, Skahill has served in key international sales positions, most recently as vice president of international sales until April 2013.


The US-Poland Business Council advocates for increased trade and investment opportunities in Poland, where Smithfield is the largest producer of fresh and packaged meats such as Krakus Ham. Smithfield produces fresh pork and poultry as well as smoked and cooked hams, sausages, hot dogs, bacon, canned meats and pâtés. The products are available in more than 40 countries at retail and through foodservice channels. The company also is a leading producer of hogs in Poland.
