CHAZY, NY – A massive barn fire broke out at Giroux's Poultry Farm in Chazy, according to local news reports. No employees were in the building when it caught fire, but 50,000 chickens are believed to have died. Giroux's Poultry Farm is a family owned and operated business that produces eggs.

The fire broke out in the farm's cage-free barn at about 11 am March 19. Chazy Fire Chief Mike Cahoon said crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings on the premises. The cage-free barn is one of five at the farm. News reports stated the barn was new and part of the Giroux's expansion.

At least 18 fire departments helped battle the blaze by trucking in water, according to news reports. Rivers and lakes in the area remain frozen. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
