MUMBAI – McDonald's India made gradual reductions of salt and calories in the company's burgers and french fries, Reuters reported.

The company reduced sodium in buns by 10 percent and in fries by 20 percent, according to Reuters. Calories in sauces declined 30 to 40 percent over a six-month period.

McDonald's Corp. implemented the formulation adjustments to maintain customer traffic. Competition from other quick-service and fast-casual chains has intensified in India.

McDonald's developed menu items tailored to suit the Indian palate. Menus in India feature vegetarian selections, and special care is taken to ensure separation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products. India is the only country where McDonald's doesn't offer beef or pork items.
