KANSAS CITY, Mo. – James Garner, who was tapped to be the voice and face of the Beef Checkoff's advertising campaigns, died July 19 of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86.

Garner is widely known for his roles in Maverick, the 1950s television western series, and in the 1970s detective show, The Rockford Files. But Garner also represented the Beef Checkoff in the "Real Food for Real People" ad campaign. The campaign, which featured Garner and Cybill Shepherd, ran in 1987 and 1988.
