WICHITA, Kan. – A Farmland Foods pork processing facility in Wichita, Kan. re-opened after an ammonia leak injured three people June 8. Farmland is a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods, Inc.

Dennis Pittman, director of corporate communication, told
Meat&Poultrythat the surrounding plant community was unaffected by the leak, and the plant was scheduled to come online June 10.

“As the sections of the plants were cleared out, they were getting all the different areas up and operating,” he said. June 9 was the only production day lost.

Wichita and Sedgwick County hazmat crews responded at the plant after reports of a leak were received. All 101 employees had evacuated the building by the time first responders arrived. Three people suffered inhalation injuries while trying to turn off the ammonia. One person who was taken to the hospital was released following day.
