REGINA, Saskatchewan – Two new research projects will receive nearly C$1 million (US$916,323) in funding from the Canadian government and private industry.

The first project is an economic, social and environmental assessment of the Canadian beef industry. The Canadian Cattleman's Association will manage the project, which will help industry communicate areas of proficiency, outline beneficial management practices in need of improvement and shape future research and policy.

The Canadian Beef Breeds Council will manage the second project, which will focus on development of easy-to-use genomic selection tools for breed improvement.

"Strengthening the agriculture research capacity in Saskatchewan supports innovation for the long-term profitability and stability of producers," said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "Investment in these projects is a direct response to the needs identified by industry and will help producers remain a key contributor to the Canadian economy."
