MONTPELIER, Vt. – Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a new law that would require labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Currently, Vermont is the only state to have a GMO labeling law. Connecticut and Maine have laws that could take effect if neighboring states have similar laws. Vermont's law requires most foods containing GMO's to be labeled starting July 1, 2016. The bill also outlaws foods with GMOs to be labeled “all natural” or “natural”.

The state's lawmakers anticipated challenges to the new law – legislators included a legal defense fund. The Grocery Manufacturers Association called the bill “critically flawed and not in the best interests of consumers.” The association is weighing its options to respond to the law.
