FLORENCE, Ala. – Hillshire Brands Co. plans to close a production facility in Florence, Ala. by Dec. 30. The closure affects about 1,100 employees.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company said it expects to incur costs of approximately $34.4 million.


"After a comprehensive business evaluation, management determined that the facility will not allow the company to meet its efficiency or long-term profitability expectations," the company noted in theSEC filing. "Production from the facility will be sourced from other locations within the company’s operations network."

The Florence facility houses Hillshire's breakfast sandwich and breakfast sausage cooking operations.
