CARLYLE, Ill.— The Maschhoffs LLC recently entered into a consent agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) regarding repairs and improvements to a manure storage system at one of the company’s hog facilities in southeast Iowa. The company reportedly experienced a large spill of swine waste from its facility in Keosauqua, Iowa on Nov. 4, 2013.

Under the consent order, The Maschhoffs have agreed to repair the plumbing system and the connection points at the collection sump at the hog farm, as well as any other remedial measures determined necessary by a final report being prepared by an engineering firm. Under terms of the consent agreement with the IDNR, the company has also agreed to pay a $10,000 fine.

“It is important to note that while we did have a manure spill at this farm, we did contain the effluent and it did not reach waters of the state,” a company spokesperson told MeatPoultry.com.
“At The Maschhoffs, we are committed to fully complying with IDNR rules and state environmental laws to protect air and water quality in the communities where we operate,” said Tim Laatsch, executive vice president of production operations with The Maschhoffs. “We always strive to be in full compliance with environmental protection laws wherever we do business. It’s part of our company’s culture.”
