David Evans, president and CEO of Marin Sun Farms in Point Reyes Station, Calif., stated that the closure of the Petaluma harvesting facility was devastating to him and other ranchers in Marin County. However, Evans said he is committed to efforts to help build a sustainable food model, with hopes to reopen the facility so that he and other local ranchers will again be able to harvest and process their livestock there. Marin Sun Farms specializes in pasture-raised beef, poultry, pork and lamb. The company advocates sustainable farming practices and locally sourced food.
Rancho Feeding recalled approximately 8.7 million lbs. of meat products that USDA claims were processed from diseased and "unsound" animals without federal inspection. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the products, but the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has been investigating the company on concerns Rancho Feeding has been producing meat products without federal inspection. The investigation will continue despite the sale, according a Los Angeles Times report.
