WASHINGTON – Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter on Dec. 1 advanced one percent, while feedlot placements declined 4 percent, the US Department of Agriculture said in its Cattle on Feed report.

Cattle and calves on feed in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 10.9 million.


Placements in feedlots during November totaled 1.79 million, down 4 percent compared to the same period in 2013. Net placements were 1.72 million head. For November, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 lbs. were 550,000; 600-699 lbs. were 440,000; 700-799 lbs. were 362,000; and 800 lbs. and greater were 440,000. USDA said November placements are the second lowest since the series began in 1996.

Cattle slaughter during November declined 11 percent to total 1.48 million, USDA reported. Other disappearance totaled 74,000 during November, an increase of 9 percent.
