ASNIERES-SUR-SEINE, France –Consumers who follow Islamic dietary guidelines now have a tool to help them determine if the products they buy suit their faith.

Enter HalalTest, a rapid test that can detect blood and pork fat in foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other items, according to Capital Biotech SAS, makers of HalalTest. The test consists of a strip that must be put in warm water containing a sample of food. After a few minutes the strip will show either a single bar for a negative test or two bars for a positive test, which means the product contains pork or alcohol.

The HalalTest website states the product is intended for consumers wanting to ensure their meat is pork-free. Professionals in the meat business also are a target market.
