OMAHA ― On July 1, Nebraska Beef Ltd. recalled approximately 531,707 lbs of ground beef that may have been contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 and that recall later expanded to 5.3 million lbs of ground beef. One month after the recall was first initiated, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that approximately 1.2 million lbs of primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 is being recalled by the company.

The contamination was discovered through a joint investigation with state departments of health and agriculture, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and F.S.I.S. To date, 31 cases of foodborne illness in 12 states and Canada have been identified in the investigation.
