Ready-to-cook poultry weight rises 5%

WASHINGTON – Ready-to-cook poultry weight during July 2013 totaled 3.85 billion lbs., up 5 percent from July 2012, according to the US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The June 2013 revised certified total declined 4 percent to 3.53 billion lbs. The June revision represented an increase of 894,000 lbs. from last month's preliminary lbs. certified, NASS reported.
The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during July 2013 also increased 5 percent to 5.10 billion lbs., up from 4.87 billion lbs. a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 4.37 billion lbs., up 5 percent from July 2012. Mature chickens slipped 1 percent to at 68.3 million lbs., while turkey inspections totaled 643 million lbs., up 3 percent from a year ago. Ducks jumped 15 percent to 14.3 million lbs., according to NASS.
Young chickens slaughtered during July 2013 averaged 5.84 lbs. per bird, up 1 percent from a year ago, according to NASS. The average live weight of mature chickens declined 4 percent to 5.86 lbs. per bird. Turkeys slaughtered during July 2013 averaged 29.7 lbs. per bird, an increase of 2 percent from July 2012.
Ante-mortem condemnations during July 2013 totaled 10.8 million lbs. Condemnations were 0.21 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.24 percent a year earlier, NASS said. Post-mortem condemnations, at 33.9 million lbs., were 0.87 percent of quantities inspected, which compares to 0.88 percent a year ago.
