August egg production gains 1%

WASHINGTON – US egg production totaled 7.80 billion during August 2012, an increase of 1 percent over 2011 figures, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
Production included 6.76 billion table eggs and 1.04 billion hatching eggs, of which 971 million were broiler-type and 69 million were egg-type, NASS said. The total number of layers increased slightly from 2011 to 335 million. August egg production per 100 layers climbed 1 percent to 2,324 eggs, according to NASS.
All layers in the US on Sept. 1, 2012, increased slightly from 2011 to 336 million of which 284 million layers produced table or market type eggs, 49.8 million layers produced broiler-type hatching eggs, and 2.84 million layers produced egg-type hatching eggs, NASS said. Rate of lay per day on Sept. 1 averaged 75.1 eggs per 100 layers, a 1 percent increase from the comparable year-ago period.
Egg-type chicks hatched during August 2012 declined to 41.4 million. Eggs in incubators declined 6 percent to 36.8 million on Sept. 1, 2012, compared to a year ago.
Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks totaled 234,000 during August 2012, down 26 percent from August 2011.
Broiler-type chicks hatched during August 2012 declined slightly to 758 million. Eggs in incubators totaled 596 million on Sept. 1, 2012, down 1 percent from 2011, according to NASS.
Leading breeders placed 7.05 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during August 2012, down 3 percent compared to the comparable year-ago period.
