June US chicken exports slip in value

WASHINGTON – In June, US chicken exports totaled 275,749 metric tons valued at $328.60 million compared with 311,968 tons valued at $330.73 million in June 2010, an 11.6 percent decrease in quantity and a 0.6 percent decrease in value, according to the Aug. 12 edition of the National Chicken Council’s Washington Report.

Broiler parts exports within the overall chicken category totaled 252,410 tons valued at $287.32 million in June, 13.9 percent below the 293,244 tons in June 2010 and 2.8 percent below the $295.65 million year earlier. However, whole chicken exports significantly rose with a 31.3 percent increase in quantity and a 31.4 percent gain in value. Prepared chicken and sausages exports were up 10.4 percent in quantity and up 8.9 percent in value when this June is compared with 2010.

From January through June, US chicken exports totaled 1,640,383 tons valued at $1,929.30 million compared with 1,641,030 tons valued at $1,788.15 million, less than 1 percent decrease in quantity and a 7.9 percent increase in value. To date this year broiler parts totaled 1,514,340 tons valued at $1,697.96 million, a 1.2 percent decrease in quantity and a 7.1 percent increase in value. Whole chicken exports achieved good gains with a 22.3 percent increase in quantity and a 25.8 percent increase in value. Prepared chicken and sausages export were also up with increases of 6.3 percent and 7.1 percent, for quantity and value, respectively.

In June, top broiler parts markets were Hong Kong and Mexico. Parts exports to Hong Kong this June were 41,489 tons valued at $58.45 million, 11.0 percent increase in quantity and 2.4 increase in value when compared with June 2010. Exports of parts to Mexico were 38,738 tons valued at $36.01 million, up 2.6 percent in quantity and 30.4 percent in value. China, the 10th largest parts market in June this year, had 7,018 tons valued at $9.02 million, a 30.5 percent increase in quantity and a 13.4 percent increase in value when compared to June 2010. Russia’s quantity for June 2011 was only 3,418.6 metric tons (the 19th largest market – trailing behind Singapore, Iraq and Jordan) and the export value for June 2011 only reached $3.6 million.
