Meat industry's workplace safety improves

WASHINGTON — The U.S. meat industry continues to build on a two-decade record of improvement in worker safety, according to recent numbers released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Total recordable injury and illness rates in 2008 fell by 10.7%, while cases involving days away from work, job transfer or restriction decreased by 9.1%.
The American Meat Institute says the results illustrate the effectiveness of the industry’s companies focusing on improvement in worker and workplace safety.
