WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Stakeholders in the Florida cattle industry are asking state lawmakers to create a marketing order for a Florida beef checkoff program, according to local news reports
The initiative is called the "Beef Checkoff Program" after the federal program of the same name. The industry hopes to raise up to $900,000 annually through a $1 assessment on the sale of every head of cattle. The money will be used to promote beef consumption and research in Florida.
The measure requires approval from the Florida Legislature, which meets March 3, and Gov. Rick Scott. Florida cattle producers must also approve the program by a majority vote in a referendum to be held within six months of the program's enactment.
