WASHINGTON – Whether or not the state of California can block the slaughter of downer pigs will be decided by the Supreme Court, according to The Associated Press. On July 27, the high court agreed to hear an appeal from the National Meat Association.
After the 2008 release of an undercover Humane Society video showing workers mishandling cows at a Southern California facility, California strengthened regulations against slaughtering downers.
