KENOSHA, Wis. – Centrifuge systems are helping meat and poultry processors recover animal by-products for resale, providing a new source of annual revenues.
At the 2014 International Processing & Production Expo in Atlanta, Centrisys Corp., Kenosha, Wis., is touting its centrifuge technologies as a viable solution for high throughput for recovery of fats, oils and grease. The company's list of customers includes leading meat and poultry processors such as Sáo Paulo, Brazil-based JBS SA.
At the show, Centrisys exhibited its three-phase decanter centrifuge design, which uses an energy-efficient hydraulic scroll drive and an advanced control system. After screening wastewater containing 0.5 percent to 1.0 percent total solids, the solids are concentrated using a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit. The DAF skimmings are collected, heated and fed into a decanter centrifuge to recover the fats, oils and grease (40 to 60 percent solids). Centrisys said its system improves on what historically has been a two-step process by instead separating the skimmings from the water in one step into quality oil and a protein-enriched cake.
The company said a chicken plant that processes more than 100,000 chickens per day, for example, can realize a full return on investment in less than two years.
