CHARD, Somerset – Fire and rescue crews responded to an early-morning fire at an Oscar Mayer plant in the town of Chard. Two engines from Chard and on from Ilminster arrived at the plant following a 5:10 a.m. report of smoke in the plant room, according to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

“The fire involved a refrigeration compressor and was extinguished by isolation,” the fire service said in a statement on its web site. “There was 50 percent heat damage to the compressor and light smoke damage to the first and second floor of the factory. Fire crews used two positive pressure ventilation fans and four breathing apparatus to deal with the incident. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.”
